The following email was sent to Lexington Mayor Jim Gray on Aug. 6.
My name is Clay Davis, and I am the Community Outreach Director for a local, grassroots organization called We See You Watching Lexington. We are a group of citizens concerned with the lack of transparency and oversight regarding government use of surveillance in our city.
I have attempted to contact you via Facebook Messenger and have received no response from you or anyone at your office. With your exemplary track record of being accessible to Lexingtonians, I must admit I find it considerably alarming that you have not responded to my attempts to reach you.
I would very much like to schedule an appointment to meet with you, so that a frank and open discussion can be had regarding these surveillance issues as well as the ordinance that we have proposed that will ensure accountability, transparency and oversight not only for technologies currently being deployed, but for any that might be introduced to our community in the future.
Mayor Gray, this is an opportunity for you to be a part of something vitally important to the community that you care so much about. This issue deserves leadership and this city deserves the privacy protections that numerous other modern cities have already enacted.
I very much look forward to working with you on this critically vital issue and am excited to hear back from you.
Thank you, in advance, for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Clay Davis
Community Outreach Director
